Arthur Hills, ASGCA, Founder and Principal - Over the past four decades, Arthur has presided over design efforts from the firm's Toledo, Ohio, headquarters. He is a past president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA).
Hills & Forrest is among the game's elite practitioners of golf course architecture. More than 200 of the firm's original designs are in play across the United States, Europe and Asia. They include a diverse collection of golf communities, private clubs, resorts, and daily-fee developments.
The firm's reputation, built by 46 years of award-winning designs, rests on its ability to design distinctive golf courses that are both playable and challenging; dramatic and innovative, yet traditional; and constructed to the highest standards of environmental sensitivity. The firm strongly believes in working as a team to create unique, lasting and award-winning golf courses for its clients. Arthur Hills sums it up best, "We try to build a course that is natural, that relates to the land and doesn't require a tremendous amount of earth moving - always keeping in mind the strategy of the game and the elements that provide beauty in a golf course."
Hills designed The Sanctuary and completed construction in 1992, calling The Sanctuary “my island masterpiece” and “elegant, exquisite, and rare.” Through the years following, Hills will visit and work with The Sanctuary team to update the course. On his latest visit to The Sanctuary, he commented, “The Sanctuary Golf Club has for years been a special course. Its Sanibel location, has from its beginning, created a very private aura. I admire how the Club has continued to take good care of the course and from time to time has, working with us, made refinements. The result is that the course is today at its best! It is a beautiful place to live and to play golf.”
